Thoughts for a New Decade

Do you remember the excitement of December 28, 1999? I remember stocking up on all sorts of essentials -- dried beans and soup mixes, reference books that would tell me what to do when everything collapsed in the Y2K catastrophe. I stashed $20 bills all over the house, just in case banks couldn't access their computers and I couldn't access the ATMs. I was prepared for anything and everything.

Y2K turned out to be a big, fat nothing. The day dawned, yawned, and business returned to normal. The decade, however, was anything but a nothing -- and I, for one, am very glad to see it gone. With job loss, long term separations for short-term work, death of loved ones, the decade of the 2000's will not be missed. I am so glad to see these years pass, I am tempted to purge all that remain of the years. However, I only have 7 more days left of school break, so I must prioritize, and I suppose that means laundry, cooking, and finishing the book club book due next Tuesday (and I probably need to write a few lesson plans before school begins again).

Before I begin to look ahead, a short list of accomplishments from the past decade:
  1. I earned an NC teaching license and got a "real" teaching job in a year of teacher cuts.
  2. Jim was hired and retained by Wachovia in a year of severe bank cuts.
  3. Andrew graduated high school and began Western Carolina University.
  4. Taylor wrote and performed original songs, and soloed at South Meck's chorus productions.
  5. Zack joined MIB at Quail Hollow Middle School, earned a spot in the All Region Honor's band for snare drum.
  6. Mike begin Sax lessons in May and joined the 6th grade band as a 5th grader for the Winter concert.
We have been productive and blessed amidst the trials and difficulties.

Now it is time for setting goals for the coming year.

  1. Always at the top of the list -- lose the weight. My goal -- 10 weeks, 70 days, 20 pounds. That is doable -- right?
  2. One room per month will be purged, cleaned, and updated. There are 12 months, and 10 rooms. I will save the children's rooms for the summer months, as they will take much longer than the other rooms.
  3. Love more, laugh more, live more. Can I do this and accomplish number 1??
  4. Just make it through 365 days!!
I have named my blog Just Making It because that is how I wander through my days, it seems. I hope someone will join me on this adventure called 2010!

Blessings!

Marybet
