Many people don't understand. I simply love to read.
Growing up, I always had a crazy notion in the back of my head that I wanted to read all of the books in a library. I still think that would be a pretty cool thing to accomplish. I kind of wish I had attempted it. I just finished a children's novel (Everything for a Dog by Ann Martin - excellent book, btw) in which one of the main characters had the exact same goal -- only he had almost accomplished it.
Last week, I began to think again about my reading goals. I googled all the books that have ever been #1 on the NY Times best seller list. The list started August 9, 1942 and as of yesterday, Sept. 19, 2010, there have been 559 books in the #1 spot. I've read at least 59 of them already. I've read every book on the list in 1960 -- there was only one, Hawaii by James Michener. Luckily, I went through a Michener phase in college and read almost everything he wrote, though I can't for the life of me remember why.
Wouldn't it be cool to be able to say that I've read every NY Times #1 best seller?
I figure that it will take me at least 10 years to accomplish this goal, and since they are adding books all the time, I'll add a few years to that. I'm turning 47 on Sunday. My goal is to have read every NY Times #1 best seller by the time I'm 60.
I've already ordered the very first book ever to be #1 -- And Now Tomorrow by Rachel Field. Turns out, these old books are kind of hard to find, but Amazon has their ways.
But first, I have to complete my book club reading for October. Best get reading!
