Summer of Eating Better

My family has food issues.

My 2nd son has diagnosed allergies to tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. My daughter self-diagnosed a gluten-intolerance based on the appearance of symptoms when she eats gluten and the absence of symptoms when she doesn't eat gluten. (Since the most valid way to diagnose a gluten issue is with a biopsy (ouch!), her doctor said that if not eating gluten makes her feel better, by all means, don't eat gluten. I like that kind of thinking.) My husband has something making him itchy; thus far, several doctors have not been successful at pinning it down. Now we realize that the itchy scalp issues of some of the kids may be related to the same itchy reaction my husband is having.

I have cholesterol and weight issues -- closely related, I'm sure.

So I'm declaring this the summer of eating better. I don't know if I'll be able to turn this ship around easily -- we have gotten pretty entrenched in poor eating habits in the years that I've been in graduate school and now working. But that is the goal -- getting 4 kids, a husband, and me to eat better without causing world war three in the house. Can we do it? Stay tuned.....
